Confirmation

Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the "sacraments of Christian initiation," whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace.[88] For "by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed."

-Catechism of the Catholic Church

Preparation for Confirmation

In the Diocese of Richmond the confirmation preparation for young people is a two year process. Those wishing to receive the sacrament of confirmation must participate either:

  1. In the 10th grade religion class if they are a student at CHS,
  2. Or in the parish religious education classes for 10th grade.

Then when they enter the eleventh grade both public and Catholic High students are required to participate in the year long confirmation program in the parish.

The confirmation program consists of :

  • Weekly classes (beginning in September).
  • 20 service hours to the parish and wider community
  • The confirmation retreat.

Each confirmation candidate is asked to select and the beginning of the program a confirmation sponsor.

Sponsors:

The role of the confirmation sponsor is to be a person who accompanies the candidate for confirmation through the preparation process.

In order to serve as a sponsor a person must themselves:

  • have received all three sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist),
  • be at least 16 years of age,
  • be "leading a life in harmony with the faith and role to be undertaken".

The father or mother of the person being baptized may not serve as a sponsor.

The confirmation sponsor should be an active member of Holy Trinity or another local parish and be willing to commit themselves to participation in the second year of the preparation process with the candidate.
